‘Claiming a Space’ and a cause for celebration

An historic event took place in Galway on November 9th last where 23 members of the Traveller community from Galway city and county graduated from NUI Galway with a level 7 Diploma in Community Development Practice from the Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development.
The journey began in late 2017 when the Galway Traveller Movement, CAN and the Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development NUIG came together to design the programme.
“The achievement of the 23 members of the Traveller community was ground breaking. The commitment made by the 23 mature students 15 women and 8 men to the course has been inspiring with the learning and knowledge shared a two way process” – Dr Helen Casey, NUI Galway Lecturer.
“Leadership is essential for social change and this course was a great example of collaboration in action.” – Pat Tobin.
“The hard work and passion needed to complete the diploma in community development practice has paid off. We are so proud of our achievements. We shared our cultural knowledge and stories as part of the learning. The result was empowering” – Bridget Kelly, Deputy coordinator, GTM
