Leadership Development: Grassroots Community Development & Leadership

CAN’s most recent work in delivering this programme was in the Midlands, in partnership between four Traveller organisations – Laois Traveller Action Group, Offaly Traveller Movement, Westmeath Traveller Project and the Longford PHC Project – and Exchange House Ireland, the HSE, and The University of Galway.

The programme is designed to build leadership and community development skills, drawing on people’s lived experience and creating opportunities for acquiring new skills and knowledge.  It is accredited by NUI Galway with a Diploma (Level 7) and contains six modules on Community Development Practice: Leadership, Communication and Groupwork, Social Analysis, Research Techniques, Project Planning and Public Policy.

This is the fourth such programme that CAN has delivered since 2014.  Our first was a national programme in partnership with the Irish Traveller Movement.  Two further programmes were then delivered in Cork and Galway, in partnership with local Traveller organisations and NUI Cork and Galway.  Seventy-five members of the Traveller community have completed the programmes, with some also progressing to degree level and others into employment.
